Washington — President Donald Trump signed two executive orders Monday to accelerate America’s position as the world leader in quantum technology and harden government systems against future threats.
The first order launches a national push to build a quantum computer capable of tackling major scientific calculations. It also directs efforts to develop quantum-enabled sensors and networks within five years.
The second order requires federal agencies to transition their computer systems to post-quantum cryptography standards by 2031. Officials say the move will let the U.S. government set stronger security benchmarks that can withstand the code-breaking power of advanced quantum machines.
The signing occurred in the Oval Office, where Trump reviewed and approved the documents from a binder on his desk while surrounded by aides.
Quantum computing remains an emerging field with major implications for national security, drug discovery, materials science, and encryption. These orders focus on both advancing U.S. capabilities and proactively defending against the risks that come with the technology.
The action comes as global competition in the sector intensifies.
