A Dollar General store manager was fatally shot during an apparent dispute over a $1.58 purchase in Columbus, Georgia, leaving a community mourning the loss of a woman remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother, and hardworking employee.

The victim, identified by authorities as 44-year-old Alexis Hill, was working at a Dollar General store on June 23 when an argument reportedly broke out with a customer over the purchase of hamburger buns. Investigators said the confrontation quickly escalated, ending in gunfire inside the store.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported Hill to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

According to law enforcement officials, the suspect fled the store after the shooting. Police later located the man and attempted to take him into custody. During the encounter, authorities said the suspect shot a police K-9 and pointed a firearm at officers, prompting them to return fire. The suspect was killed at the scene, while one officer and the K-9 sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators have identified the suspect as Jerome Willis. Authorities said there is no indication that Hill and Willis knew each other before the incident.

Family members and coworkers described Hill as a caring, dedicated woman who took pride in her work. She leaves behind three children and two grandchildren, and loved ones say her death has left an unimaginable void in their lives.

The tragic shooting has sparked renewed conversations about workplace safety and the risks faced by retail employees who interact with customers daily. Incidents involving disputes over relatively minor purchases have highlighted the unpredictable dangers that frontline workers can encounter.
