A senior Russian presidential adviser offered a creative interpretation of proposed new American sanctions against Russia. Anton Kobyakov suggested that the measures indicate Washington now recognizes an unfavorable outcome for itself in the Ukraine conflict.
Speaking at an event, Kobyakov addressed recent proposals from Senator Marco Rubio and members of Congress for tougher restrictions. “Why did Marco Rubio and the US Congress propose tougher sanctions the other day? It’s simple. They now understand the outcome of the special military operation. And it’s not in their favor,” he said.
The comments come amid discussions in Washington about additional sanctions on Russia, including efforts to tighten measures related to oil and other sectors. US officials have described such steps as tools to increase pressure while pursuing broader foreign policy goals.

The Department of Justice announced Friday that Bisaam Ghafoor, 21, of Leawood, Kansas; Elias Shamsaldeen, 21, of Porterville, California; and Bereen Dzayee, 25, of Lakeside, California, were taken into custody in coordinated operations. Prosecutors allege the trio discussed violent attacks on US troops and attempted to use cryptocurrency to fund weapons purchases, including RPGs and drones.
According to court documents, the men collectively sent more than $2,000 to an undercover contact they believed was connected to ISIS. Officials praised the early disruption of the plot. The charges carry potential penalties of up to 20 years in prison.
