Sen. Chuck Schumer declared that the SAVE America Act will not pass the Senate. He said voter ID requirements and proof of citizenship rules have no chance of becoming law.
In a floor speech, Schumer told viewers the bill is finished before it starts. “I’ll say it as many times as it takes: the SAVE Act is DEAD ON ARRIVAL here in the Senate,” he stated. “I don’t care how Republicans try to package their plan to resurrect the old ghost of Jim Crow. We will kill it!”
The remarks target the legislation that passed the House earlier in 2026. The SAVE America Act would require people to show documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections. It would also mandate photo identification at polling places.
What the SAVE America Act Requires
The bill amends the National Voter Registration Act. States could no longer accept voter registration applications without proof of citizenship. Acceptable documents include a U.S. passport, a certified birth certificate paired with photo ID, or a naturalization certificate.
